There's no puddle, no dripping tap, no obvious noise — just a slowly rising water bill, a patch of grass that stays suspiciously green, or a section of paving that quietly starts to sink.     1. A water bill that keeps creeping up

    The most common early sign. A hidden leak wastes water 24 hours a day — often thousands of litres a week — which quietly inflates your metered bill even though you haven't changed your habits.

    2. A ticking water meter with everything off

    The single best DIY test. Turn off every tap and appliance and watch your external water meter for two minutes. Any movement at all means water is escaping somewhere between the meter and the house — usually on the supply pipe.

    3. A sudden or gradual drop in pressure

    Old pipes narrow with corrosion and losing pressure to a leak makes it worse. If showers, garden taps or the combi boiler feel weaker than they used to, the pipe is worth investigating.

    4. Damp patches, boggy ground or lush green strips

    In dry weather especially, a leak below ground pushes moisture upward. You'll see a strip of grass that stays vivid green while everything around it browns off, or a boggy patch you can't quite explain.

    Frost damage

    How to test for a hidden underground leak yourself

    Short answer

    Step 1

    Turn off every tap, shower and appliance that uses water. Include the washing machine, dishwasher and toilet fill valves.

    Step 2

    Locate your external water meter — usually in a small round or rectangular cover just inside your boundary, often near the pavement.

    Note the exact position of the meter dial or digits. Wait two minutes.
