    The problem

    Short answer

The property required a replacement water supply pipe. Access was needed at selected points along the route so the existing supply could be replaced with new pipework while keeping disruption to the driveway as limited as possible.

The route ran under a block-paved driveway, so the priority was to plan the new supply line first and open only the small pits we actually needed. Our water main replacement service starts the same way on every job: confirm the existing pipe route, check the meter and stop tap positions, and scan for services before any digging begins.

    The replacement

Sections of the block paving were carefully lifted to create access points for the new supply route. New blue MDPE water supply pipework was installed and brought into the property through a protected entry point. The new supply was then connected into the internal pipework before commissioning and testing.

Where ground conditions allow, we pull the new pipe underground between access pits using trenchless moling, which avoids trenching the full length of a drive. If you're not yet sure whether you need a repair or a full replacement, start with underground water supply pipe leak detection and repair.

    The result

    Short answer

The new water supply pipe was successfully installed and the disturbed sections of block paving were carefully reinstated.

The finished result demonstrates how a water main can be replaced while keeping excavation and disruption to the property to a minimum. The original blocks were relaid and re-sanded rather than patched with new material, so the driveway looks as it did before the work started.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does a water main replacement take in East Grinstead?

Most domestic water main replacements are completed in a single working day, including excavation, installing the new supply pipe, connecting it into the property, testing and reinstating the surface.

Do you have to dig up the whole driveway?

No. On this East Grinstead job we opened only small access points along the route rather than trenching the full driveway. Where ground conditions suit it, moling lets us pull the new pipe underground between two small pits.

What pipe is used for a new water main?

Modern supply pipes are 25mm or 32mm blue MDPE, which is WRAS-approved, corrosion-free and typically laid at around 750mm depth to protect it from frost and traffic loading.

Who is responsible for replacing a water supply pipe?

The private supply pipe from the boundary to the house belongs to the homeowner. The water company looks after the communication pipe from the main in the road to the boundary.

Will the block paving be put back afterwards?

Yes. Blocks are lifted by hand and re-used, the sub-base is compacted and the paving is relaid and re-sanded so the driveway matches the surrounding area.

When is replacement better than repairing the pipe?

If the existing supply is lead, old galvanised steel, or has already leaked more than once, replacement is usually the better value option. A single failure on otherwise sound modern pipe can normally just be repaired.
