What is moling, in one sentence?
Moling is a trenchless technique where a pneumatic 'mole' is fired underground from a small pit to a small pit, pulling a new pipe behind it — so your garden, drive or paving doesn't need to be dug up.
Typical moling prices in the UK
As a working guide for 2025, moling a new 25mm MDPE water main typically costs around £80–£150 per metre. A larger 32mm service pipe is usually £100–£180 per metre. Most domestic water main replacements are 15–25 metres long, so a typical job lands somewhere between £1,500 and £3,500 all-in, including connection and pressure testing.
What's included in the price
A proper quote should cover digging the two small entry/exit pits, the moling itself, supplying and installing the new MDPE pipe, connecting at both ends (stopcock and internal), pressure testing, backfilling and reinstating the small pits. Make sure you get this in writing — vague day-rate quotes are a red flag.
What pushes the price up
Longer runs, larger pipe diameters, harder ground (heavy clay or stones), restricted access, deeper pipes, and crossing other services (gas, electric, telecoms) all add cost. So does needing a Water Board notification or a road crossing.
Moling vs trenching — the real saving
On paper, the per-metre rate for trenching can look cheaper. But once you add the cost of digging out and removing the spoil, then reinstating the lawn, paving or tarmac on top, an open-cut trench is usually significantly more expensive than moling — sometimes 30–50% more for a typical domestic run, and the disruption lasts weeks rather than a single day.
Is moling always the right choice?
Almost always, for replacing a domestic water main or laying a new supply to an outbuilding. The exceptions are rocky ground, very congested service routes, or when the existing pipe needs to be physically removed (rather than abandoned in place). We'll always tell you honestly if moling isn't the best option for your job.
