How to Spot a Water Leak in Your Home

    Why Early Detection Matters

A small leak left unchecked can lead to structural damage, mould growth, and hundreds of pounds in wasted water bills. The sooner you spot a leak, the cheaper and easier it is to fix.

    Unexplained Damp Patches

If you notice damp spots on walls, ceilings, or floors that weren't there before — especially in areas away from bathrooms and kitchens — there may be a hidden pipe leak behind the surface. Discolouration, bubbling paint, or peeling wallpaper are all common signs.

    Rising Water Bills

If your water usage hasn't changed but your bill has crept up, a leak could be the culprit. Even a slow drip from a pipe joint can waste thousands of litres over a few months.

    Low Water Pressure

A sudden drop in water pressure — particularly at a single tap or shower — can indicate a leak in the supply pipe. If multiple fixtures are affected, the issue may be with the main supply entering your property.

    The Sound of Running Water

If you can hear water running when all taps and appliances are off, take it seriously. This is often the clearest sign of a leak in the pipework beneath floors or behind walls.

    What to Do Next

If you suspect a leak, turn off the stopcock to prevent further damage and call a professional. At Grange Plumbing, we use acoustic detection and thermal imaging to pinpoint leaks accurately — no unnecessary digging or damage.
